The words ‘Love is blind’ were originally created by Shakespeare in his play The Merchant Of Venice, when Jessica, the daughter of Shylock the Jew, leaves her father’s house in the darkness of night. While handing over the casket to her lover Lorenzo, she says:

But love is blind and lovers cannot see

The pretty follies that themselves commit;

Jessica herself exemplifies the blindness of her love by defying her filial duties towards her father and eloping away with her lover.

When we talk of love, we do not mean spiritual love. We usually mean physical love that satisfies the carnal desires or passions. The fury of carnal desires that such a love evokes makes a person blind to reason. This type of relationship is misnamed as love. It is, in fact, infatuation, a blind pursuit and madness.

It has been rightly observed that the relationship based on blind physical love becomes monotonous and boring after a short span of time, while friendship grows and flourishes as the time passes.
