Tarot ReadingsThe standard pack of tarot cards today is composed of four suits of 14 cards each. These 56 cards make up the minor arcana. The major arcana, or trumps, contains an additional 22 cards decorated with figures representing natural laws, elements, virtues and vices. The unnumbered figure of the fool has come down to us as the joker in everyday card playing. While experts recognized many existing versions of the accurate order of the trumps, the following is one that is widely accepted: 0 the fool; 1 the juggler; 2 the female pope; 3 the empress; 4 the emperor; 5 the pope; 6 the lover; 7 the chariot; 8 justice; 9 the hermit; 10 the wheel of fortune; 11 strength; 12 the hanged man; 13 death; 14 temperance; 15 the devil; 16 the falling tower; 17 the star; 18 the moon; 19 the sun; 20 judgment day; 21 the world.
Tarot Reading as a Divination Tool The tarot reading is usually viewed as a tool for divination. A traditional tarot reading involves someone who is looking for answers to personal questions (seeker) and someone who knows how to interpret the cards (reader). After the seeker has shuffled and cut the deck, the reader places the chosen cards in a pattern (usually called a spread). Each position in the spread has a meaning, and each card has a meaning as well. The reader combines these two meanings to shed light on the seeker's question. It seems like a simple process, but rarely presented in a simple way. Some religions shun the cards, and the scientific community condemns them as symbols of unreason, a legacy from an unenlightened past. Let us set aside these grey images for now and consider the tarot reading simply for what it is - a deck of picture cards. So what can we do with them? The answer lies with the unconscious - the deep level of memory and awareness that resides within each of us, but outside our daily experience. Although we often ignore the action of the unconscious, it profoundly affects everything we do. In his writings, Sigmund Freud emphasized on the irrational, primitive aspect of the unconscious. He thought that it was the source of our most unacceptable desires and urges. While his contemporary, Carl Jung, emphasized the positive, creative aspect of the unconscious. We may never know the full power of the unconscious, but there are ways to explore it. Many techniques have been developed for this purpose such as psychotherapy, dream interpretation, visualization and meditation. The tarot reading is another such tool.
